Book Review: Blood at the Root by LaDarrion Williams

Rating: ...Literally Marvelous.

Summary:

The book follows the story of Malik Baron, an orphan who, at 17 years old learns he is the descendent of a long line of powerful magical figures. In the search for more answers about identity, and the whereabouts of his missing mother, he begins a journey of discovery at a magical HBCU, Caiman University. There, Malik explores his heritage and uncovers the truth about his mother's disappearance, exposing the magical community's vulnerabilities to an ancient evil. As Malik navigates magical politics and buried mysteries, he must embrace his legacy to protect both his old and new families.

Lindsay's Thoughts:

Though the magic is captivating and beautifully interwoven with real lore from various cultures, it's the interpersonal relationships that made me love this book. The characters are fully realized. They are funny and sweet and complicated-- the kind of friends and family that the reader might know in their real life. It's upon that foundation that the intrigue of the magic builds and is able to enchant the reader.

Magda's Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this book and its amazing world-building. It’s split into three acts, and Act 2 was definitely a highlight for me since I love stories set in schools. The lore and the different tribes add so much depth to the magic and make me want to learn more about this universe. I hope the whole series gets written because I can’t wait to see where Malik’s journey goes.
