Book Review: Coming Home by Brittney Griner with Michelle Burford

Rating: ...Literally Marvelous.

Summary:

Brittney shares the harrowing details of her sudden arrest, days before Russia invaded Ukraine; her bewilderment and isolation while navigating a foreign legal system amid her trial and sentencing; her emotional and physical anguish as the first American woman ever to endure a Russian penal colony, while the #WeAreBG movement rallied for her release; the chilling prisoner swap with Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout; and her remarkable rise from hostage to global spokesperson on behalf of America’s forgotten.

Lindsay's Thoughts:

The breadth of topics this book weaves togther made it impossible for me to put down. It is a memoir at its , but it's also a exploration of geopolitics, race, gender, pay inequity in sports, the human need for community, and of course, the power that comes from having a soul mate to see you through hard times.

Magda's Thoughts:

Reading this book opened my eyes to the struggles detained Americans face and how they can become political pawns. BG's candid description of her experiences made me appreciate the freedoms and rights in the US. If you think you know the story or have assumptions about what happened, I highly recommend this book; it changed my mind about many misconceptions.
